A student recently asked me, “Is it necessary to use sex to sell my image in the entertainment industry?” Initially, I began to define ‘sex’ as being case specific. It is evident that sex holds an ever-present dominance in the entertainment industry and has for quite some time.

However, the idea of what is acceptable and what is profane has been constantly evolving. I left it up to my student to explore this question, “Are you willing to, according to cultural tendencies, ‘exploit’ yourself and your own morality for the sake of popularity?”

The answer to this question is not as simple as it seems. Without a doubt, sex permeates the very fabric of the entertainment industry’s primary marketing strategy. Appearing in all major forms of media and even in public education, it is as direct as it is subtle. Some people associate ‘sex’ with love and positive feelings. Others see a more lustful and negative connotation (e.g. moralists). The true discrepancies surrounding ‘sex’ arise when these different social norms clash at a live performance where a fifteen year old girl is thrust on stage with little more than two pieces of fabric separating her from the audience. Again, to some, this is what makes the artist more attractive. Others, however, see this behavior as deplorable and even offensive.

In order to gain a foothold in the entertainment industry you must have unique qualities that distinguish you from your competition. Sometimes this entails piercings, tattoos, tennis ball colored felt shoes, stylish haircuts, or even steamy photo shoots. Some people frown on the sight of a tattoo or piercing. Others shun the sight of a young girl on stage wearing a leather push-up and a mini-skirt ala commando. Ultimately, the public will always have a choice to play or pass when it comes to your material so you should constantly ask yourself, “Would I be entertained by this?” The next question that begs to be asked is, “Am I comfortable using sex, or other image enhancements to sell my artistry?”

Remember though, this generation’s fashion can be the next generation’s faux pas. You will always be remembered by the image you present. The public will never know any different. Ultimately, people have the choice to purchase your music and support you as an artist. Who you are on stage doesn’t necessarily portray who you are as a person. If you have found success through an image that some view as objectionable but you find entertaining and acceptable, you should always go with what is best for you. Having said that, you should know exactly what you want to be remembered for; being a sex symbol or a great artist. That choice is always up to you.

Judging.

This is what I believe,I believe that the heart and the intentions behind the actions are as valuable if not more than the actions. I do agree with:"remember who you are on stage and who you are as a person might not be the same". Does an  actor playing a mean role automatically makes him an mean person in real life? I believe not. Entertainment is entertainment, some people want to portray themselves on stage in a sense who they are in everyday life, and some put on a mask or a different skin because they are like actors. The intentions behind the actions are what should make the difference. I am horrified to see that we as Christian could possibly judge so harshly without evaluating the heart, when we are all sinners and it is not our place to judge. If God was so intolerant,we would all probably have no place in Heaven, but God is love and it is with Love that he guide us(sinners) toward him and I believe it is through love that we should bring people to believe in and commit to God,not through despise. Despise and hatred I believe is not encouraged in the Bible and it will only push away people. So if you believe strongly that it is not the proper way to live life or in this context,to entertain, it is your right, but as a Christian,I believe there is a loving way to show and express yourself and a scornful way to do so..which do you believe is better?

Sex selling=No talent.

If you had true talent you wouldn't need sex to sell. For those who defend selling sex well you must not know what hard working talent and respect is. Most people who defend sex seling no talent singers are the ones spreading STD's like crazy. Their the ones who actually thinks its perfectly normal and not a big deal to get 12 STD's in 1 month. Sex is overrated point blank. The media makes sex look like as if its the biggest joy in life. Why do you think so many teen girls are deciding to value themselves from boys and become whores? Note:Whore is not a strong word, whores do exist. In american and or pop culture has brainwashed people into thinking that there is no whore and that you can do whatever you want and sleep with whoever you want any day any time without even knowing the person(one night stands) Majority of singers today are highly paid strippers. They might be a prostitute too(you might never know if some singers actually sleep with music producers to get to the top)

not true

God did create a sex appeal between a man and a woman but NOT for commerciality or for large groups.  Sex appeal is for the MARRIED couples because Sex is awesome in the confines of marriage.  The idea of using it to sell records as a CHRISTIAN, is completely wrong.  If your not a Christian by definition you have a different standard to live by.  By claiming to be a Christian the standard is no longer subjective, it becomes Christ.   We are to only look at our mates with those intentions.  The idea of going to a concert, looking at the performer say a woman, in "sexually appealing" way is not only MORALLY wrong but biblically appalling.

Sex Can Sell Music- But only if used properly

The question isn't so much so about using sex to sell your music. What the bigger issue is HOW sex appeal is being used.
In a postive way that brings good positive attention? what way?
Even in the selling and advertisments- sex appeal can bring more conversions but ONLY if the sex appeal was correctly to bring attention to the product.
So it depends.

THANK YOU for understanding the nature of social values!

I really think it's wonderful that you wrote this post without pushing a view in favor of or against using sex appeal in music careers. There are certainly plenty of people, including some people who have posted above me, who find the idea absolutely horrendous. There are others who love it. I appreciate that you, Dave Brooks, aren't making a judgment here. I think you're right on target in saying that people have to make the decision for themselves based on their own personal values and what works for them.  Kudos for being non-judgmental and open minded. Keep on sending that message! Even though the people who believe in absolute black-and-white judgments about morality will voice their disagreement (even condemnation) more loudly than the people who really get what you're saying will voice their support, the important thing is not how many people tell you they think you're wrong or right. The important things are that you judge not lest you be judged, that you remember that neither you nor I nor anyone on this planet knows everything, and that you default to nonjudgmentality and understanding when you see that there isn't a hard-and-fast answer to something.Keep up the good work!

Sex

I don't know about using your looks to sell your music, but I'm going all the way no matter what the anyone says.

Using Sex Appeal to Sell Music

Wow, what a great topic for discussion.  Personally speaking I'm "old" school and believe that bona-fide vocal talent should be present first and foremost before the artist is considered a star or given that status.  Sex appeal or what "one" finds sexy is such a relative term.  I suppose it really depends on the type of music the artist is selling.  For POP, R&B, Rock, HIP HOP, Gangsta Rap, Alternative, it appears as if sex trumps talent.  In my humble opinion, Brittney Spears, Beyonce' , JLO, Janet Jackson and all the others like them don't really have vocal talent but what they have is an ability to put "butts in seats".  I would never buy their music and I doubt if I would attend any of their concerts.  But if they appear on TV and I happen to surf by I may stay a moment and watch "The Show".
I think if an artist is truly serious about the art of singing  then they would take vocal lessons and do the work.  As a Jazz vocalist, a genre that is not commericalized much because it's a hard sell to find young listeners mostly undereducated to appreicate standards I'm very frustrated.+  But studying Jazz vocal technique gave me an appreication for vocal skill, mastery of lyrical interpretation and respect for  muscianship. it's doing the scales everyday, learning the material, understanding the lyric, knowing how to read a chart or if not then at least knowing enough to talk intelligently to the instrumentalist.  It's about  being a musician first and foremost never the chick singer who has to rely on her body and looks...looks fade.
Of course the industry being what it is...whatever sells is what they will push and since I have a MBA, from a business persepctive, I really do understand their position.  Record companies take a big chance on artists and there is no guarantee that an album will make a profit much less break-even.  So what's my take on it.  Well strive for a balance.  Have the talent, hone it and treat your God-given beauty with care and respect.

Don't Forget, God Created Sex Appeal!

I think in our human haste to find fault in everyone besides ourselves, logic is evasive.  God created sex appeal.  He made us appealing to look at by the opposite sex and there is nothing wrong with that, moralist or not..  Although, there is a line that can and is often crossed in an attempt to gain the attention of the audience.  When we begin exposing body parts that are culturally mandated to be covered then we have crossed the line.  We must be who God created us to be as a person.  I can tell you now, that none of us were created to be whores.  He created us to have self respect and dignity.  When we loose sight of that then we are in danger of misrepresenting who we are as a person that God created for his purposes, onstage AND off.

It's not a matter of personal preference

Dave tries to ride the fence here, but deep down he knows he wouldn't want his daughter paraded as the object of sexual fantacy for countless men in the world. I guess I'm one of the "moralists" at whom Dave takes a swipe pejoratively. The two sides who say go with sex, or be modest cannot both be right. They are either both wrong, or one is right and one is wrong. But you cannot say, well it just depends on if you want to be a whore or not, whatever's best for you. Dave, humbly, you need to grow some moral courage here and value the young ladies you coach enough to counsel them away from compromising themselves.Joe Justiss

Sex Appeal

Use what God gave you,  improve on what you can and most of all be yourself(your best self).  If you like being sexy and it feels right for you - great.  Your talent and time spent perfecting your gifts will be your greatest assets anyway.  How you chose to share your abilities with the world is up to you.  If you're a sexy person off the stage and it's how you relate to people anyway it would only make sense to be that person on stage.  We all have many sides to ourselves - experiment on smaller stages, see how the feedback feels.  Learn to connect with your audience and you'll be fine. Most of all -  work your craft, have fun, smile, laugh.  If you're lucky enough to have any musical ability - appreciate it - it's a real gift.  Best of Luck to everyone!!!!

Sex is a dead end street

I believe people with sex appeal as their tool has most of the time... a very high burn out power...

Sex is a sell-out

You wrote, "Who you are on stage doesn’t necessarily portray who you are as a person."To that, all I can say is, "You're kidding, right?" What kind of foolish thought leads you or anybody else to think that you can separate the two? I'm not trying to sound insulting here, but I believe a strong response is appropriate. Madonna cannot be separated from her hyper-sensual gimmicks. Stevie Nicks could not be separated from her aura of mystery. Ozzie Osborne couldn't be separated from his bat-eating escapades. They (those acts) are more than just a "stage presence" in those people. Those acts identify well-defined limits of what those people are willing to transcend (transgress). They cannot turn off those behaviors when they leave the stage and go home at night any more than a porn "actress" can.On a lighter note, even in these sex-saturated days, for every crotch grabbing Madonna, there are still more than one fairly decent Carrie Underwood.Selling yourself as a vixen might get you an occasional gig. It might get you pregnant too. Talent is what sells. Talent is what people appreciate and remember in the end. No matter the genre of music, exploit the talent that you have. That is what will move you up the charts.

Sex appeal vs. prostitution

In response to New Crusader's otherwise reasonable comment, I think equating showing that you can be sexy on stage with prostitution (that would be selling real world sexual favors) is a bit harsh and rather unjustified. Considering that the recording industry actually has a selection of rather unsavory types, who would be more than willing to use the lure of a record contract to have aspiring artists perform actual sexual favors, I believe making the disctinction is necessary:Being sexy on stage is not the same as prostitution whether or not you have talent. The two are not related and one does not lead to the other. The mental and physical health risks involved in prostitution are not by any reasonable standard equal to those of trying to show sex appeal in a performance. Prostitution is dangerous. Trying to pull off being sexy on stage or projecting a sexy image is not any more dangerous than trying to hit high notes or pulling of a dance move. I get that New Crusader might not have meant it quite so literally but the phrasing "nothing short of prostitution" is fairly strong. If your performance becomes more enjoyable to the audience you want to reach by being sexy on stage then be sexy. There is not anything ethically or morally wrong with this unless it makes you uncomfortable or you feel like you are pressured to do it.Being sexy is just another aspect of performance like being spiritual, emotional, funny, wholesome or rebellious. It can be right for some songs and wrong for others. An unsexy performance is not morally superior to a sexy one. As with all other apsects of performance it depends on the song, the artist, the audience and the venue. Being sexy in the wrong way or at the wrong time can ruin a performance. Being sexy is not just a cheap trick that automatically increases crowd appeal and yields undeserved rewards.

using sex isnt a wise idea,

using sex isnt a wise idea, if it gets you where you want now it will eventually fade away, because if sex sells then all can be famouse so easily and you wont be unique. use the talent even if it takes more time atleast you will be rememberd on in the future for your talent not your sex apeal only.

sex fades faster in the future. your risk being forgotten easily. your hard work talent and enjoyment of what your doing no matter what anyone else things or how slow things are heading, in the end you will reach your goal as long as you still believe in it and never give up.  dreams do come true

goodluck all, :)

Choose Your Own Adventure!!!

Although I agree that sex sells in all genres, I think choosing a genre that doesn't focus primarily on sex is a good way to go.  Country artists use sex to sell but also focus heavily on family, love and hardship.  The Contemporary Christian genre may use sex to sell in a more subtle way, however the fans appreciate a moral stance.  The Contemporary Christian market also includes many different types of genre (i.e. rock, gospel, country, pop, hip-hop, etc.) from which allows the artist to choose from and create.  There are many options for the artist today, whether they choose to sell their sex or take a more ethical stance.

SEX Will Get You _________________

Sex appeal may get you noticed, but it isn't going to keep you at the top of the charts or even get you on a chart.  Sex appeal with no talent is nothing short of prostituting yourself to try and reach a level of professionalism that isn't deserved. If you have the talent, have paid your dues and can stand the test of time and the judgement of the consumer then sex appeal might push you over the top.  Lacking talent you are just another pretty face amongst thousands with a dream of becoming famous.
