I recently sat down with Brett Manning, founder of Singing Success and Jesse Nemitz, CEO of Singing Success to capture their perspective on the singer's common problem with singing high. One of things Jesse notes is that typically when singers attempt go higher, they change many things in ways that provoke unnatural forces and sounds.

“The mouth gets wider, vowels change, eyebrows raise, the larynx is stressed, and the voice gets louder,” he said. “But the goal is to get back to basics and make singing those high notes just as easy as speaking.”

But what’s behind the often obsessive fascination with wanting to sing high? That desire to hit those high notes is a part of opera mythology, Jesse says, when singers wanted a strong, resonant sound or “squillo” that would carry above the orchestra. But today the reasons are mostly tied to the impact that has on the

“With the higher voice harmonics and resonance are amplified, and the voice becomes other worldly with a super human aspect,” Jesse said. “It’s great for a good chorus where it cuts through over the mix. When executed naturally that higher voice is exciting and something you don’t hear everyday.”

But he said the superhuman aspect is more than just a highness of pitch, citing that a baritone can be impressive in sustaining E above middle C.

“That’s not exciting for a tenor, but when it explodes for a baritone then the audience erupts into thunderous applause,” Jesse said.

How Long Does To Take To Get Higher

Jesse says that reaching high notes is often attainable in just one normal voice lesson unless someone’s voice is damaged and thus requires therapy for full closure and healing of the vocal chords.

“We’re talking about full high note sounds and not like yelling and definitely not falsetto,” Jesse said. “But mastery of singing those notes may take years. For me personally it has taken five years from 2004 to be able to sing higher naturally. I’ve added an octave and a half of full voice.”

Among Jesse’s favorite examples of effortless high note singers are Bryan Duncan, Vince Gill, and the late opera icon Luciano Pavarotti.

“Paramore’s Hayley Williams has a great handle on getting higher into the voice now as does Leeland Mooring of Leeland, both students of Brett Manning,” Jesse said.

Singing Success vocal coach and founder Brett Manning agrees that the process of engaging and developing those higher notes does not take as long as one might think, as long as the voice is healthy and bad habits are not indulged.

“The average person can add an octave to his or her range in just one to three lessons,” Brett said. “Some people have genetic disposition of difficulty in producing range, but some terrible singers have worked with me with little result the first six months, but then had huge breakthroughs come in a single session. Some have gone on to be my favorite singers.”

Things To Avoid

Jesse feels that typically singers will shout or yell to get to those higher notes, distorting pure vowel sounds and hurting their voices. He also feels that record produces often push artists to hit high notes without helping the artists learn how to comfortably get there causing a definite gap between the record version and live performance of popular songs.

Brett Manning agrees that the instincts that untrained or improperly coached singers indulge is dangerous and can damage not only their voice but career potential.

“The hardest thing about singing is going higher without killing your throat,” Brett said. “Sometimes singing higher produces an achy feeling in the neck muscles. So what must be avoided is the tendency to force the voice to sing higher. Force will be met with musculature resistance. If you were using all your muscular might to hit a free throw on the basketball court and then found out that you could shoot free throws using very
little effort and more accuracy, well...you might be inclined to find out more about the finding the easier way!”

The Bottom Line for the High Pitch

Jesse points out that the goal of every singer is to communicate the message of the song.

“If you’re worried about hitting high notes, and that’s all you’re thinking about while you’re singing, the audience will pick that up,” Jesse said. “And they’ll get worried, too.”

Another key issue for Jesse is that every single voice is unique far beyond the classifications such as tenor, bass, baritone, and so on.

“I feel there are far too many subdivisions of voice. Each voice has natural weight.
Lyric tenors will vary. You can have ten guys sing the same note and they will each sound different,” Jesse said. “Honestly I think you could classify voices on as much as a one to 1,000 scale. For example I can hit tenor notes to from top to bottom of the piano with clarity. Quality will change on every pitch.”

A Singing Success Story

Worship leader Eddie Gilbert is for Jesse one of the most impressive examples of not only singing higher but vastly improving the voice overall.

“He came in very breathy and straining, but managed to develop five strong notes while singing in his first lesson,” Jesse said. “I found his pitch center. And being at an age of full vocal maturity he was definitely ready to go for those high notes.”

Visit Eddie's website to check out his personal testimony to Singing Success. You can also hear some of our other amazing before and afters here.

“It's not where you start or how fast you move forward, it's where you end up and how tenacious you are in not quitting,” Brett Manning said. “Faith will take a singer
through insurmountable difficulties and turn dirt into diamonds.”

Jesse Nemitz is living proof of what Singing Success can do to radically and naturally develop a voice so that high notes are as second nature as breathing.

high notes?

i cannever hit those high notes im only 17 do i really have to wait until my 18 for my voice to mature???

The course really works, but you have to practice

I've been using the course since Feb. 2006. I went from 1 octave to 2.5 ( still slowly climbing) so my technical note at the moment is a A Flat. G is starting to come out into some songs. My aim is high C Female. This course really works, but you get out what you put in. I practice 2 x per day, with the exception of  Sunday, but also sing in a choir on Sunday.
Point is, it didn't happen over night. If it did everyone would be a singer. So I know it works, but it takes some patience and perserverance. Hopefully within the next 12 months I'll make the trip from Canada to Tenn. and take some fine tuning from the Singing Success Team. But right now I'm doing fine with the lessons. Keep Practicing !

lip roll

response to daniel and singer

Keep searching the net - you've obviously found this site - search with key-words like calisthenics for the voice, backing tracks, vocal development - there's a lot of help out there.

HI

WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW TO TRAIN MY VOICE WITHOU USING A KEYBORD

vocal question......like everyone else.

just wondering....how do you tell if you've oversang? lets say...not singing too hard but just for too long...and if you have then how do you get your voice back on track? do you just rest and take it easy for a couple days?? i'm supposed to sing in about 4 days and i've oversang....i think. i don't think i have a nodule/polyp, just some swelling so what can i do to bring my voice back for next week? also...is it bad to practice singing late at night? sometimes it's the only time i can....

my high notes are really

my high notes are really breathy and sound more feminine than masculine,it doesnt really sound as if "I" am singing, also, I have to push my voice when i reach up to an E above high C.i think i am singing in falsetto.but how do i find my head voice ??? where is it??? i tried many different sounds i could make but none of them looked like pure head voice which should sound powerful, easy to sing,no strain etc.right now i know about my vocal fry, chest voice and whistle voice but the thing that annoys me is that breathy, straining voice i dont know if this is head voice or falsetto.please someone tell me where is my head voice :(

UNHEALTHY RESPONSE..

I do truly believe that a lot of what we go through in our susspicions through the journey of  achieving the  voice we know we are camable of is that all these suspicions arrise when we have little faith in our own selves ....this is normal and the voice could take a while to get into the motion of the run of the chords from top to bottom...you should a ttend a doctor and they would tell you exactly what the problem is if any...remember mind over matter!!

Hey...

Well i tought i might as well leave a comment as to my findings after reading this info...while i am blessed with my voice i have been taking myself seriously for a year now .... and i know that my singing songwritting and guitar playing was for more than my own comfort...others seem to love it so.... been warming up with a cd  only in the last two months...i have only recently suspected that i found my own voice so to speak....but now after reading this i cant wait untill tomorrow when the kids are awake as i know that i am gonna sing those heigher notes the way ive always wanted as i fully understand the process....chest, voice, head.....i knew what the head is but now understand that its not all about the pressure put into it its about the understanding of the different feelings or should i say vibrations of head voice and  chest...
I found it helpfull as singing lessons can be costly and friends who know seem almost jealous to share little tips and tricks ..i know it sounds mad...but youll see as you go...thats the harsh reality of it....

Singing Higher Effortlessly

I used to shout and yell and force my voice up into my high notes that it naturally became a habit even though I may still be able to hit the note. It's been a year that I have been self-coaching myself and now I can sing as effortlessly as talking. Yes, that's exactly what it feels like. Your high notes should be as easy as your low notes, although there are different sensation. I don't think it should take more than a year for anyone to naturally have a healthy higher range. It's just that most voice coach will try to make the process very slow and give you all these extra exercise to simply make a living. But if you put daily practice to it, it shouldn't take anyone more than a year even if you have never had any vocal lessons before. Here's the top main tip that what every professional coach are really trying to tell you. Try your best to make singing as easy as talking. If you pull or push, or do anything unnatural, go back and redo it as much as you need until all unnatural force are eliminated. Good luck!

Increasing my range

Will I be able to increase my vocal range by doing vocal exercises and if so, what vocal exercises should I use?

Fantastic

That was indeed a dramatic revamp of his voice. Well done, Brett. :D

this is how i do it...Muhib

Ya start with what ya have...obviously your doing the lessons...for me what helped was:
Once i was able to keep up with the lessons well, i SLOWLY started adding in more amplitude. it may sound odd but one thing that helped me was to just "talk" what I was trying to sing and I tried to "talk" it louder while hitting the pitch i was going for, then I would gradually transition into singing what I was talking at the newer more powerful level. As I did this process I payed really close attention to what my throat was doing and what the natural sound i have ("your sound") sounds like, making sure it feels natural and not stressful and my larynx was mantaining proper position. Try that? remember to spread your vowels...it will really help ya open up..least it did for me...my 2 cents....oh and check the forums to...lot of great advice there! ~~JP

Perseverance is the key...

Assuming one's voice is in fairly decent shape, I think for most folks, perseverance is the key to success.  As Jesse commented, it took him about 5 years to fully develop his high register.  Accordingly it's not easy to keep the faith.  But I disagree with the post that suggests Brett's program is 'shit'.  The fact is for the vast majority of us, it takes a great deal of disciplined practice.  I myself have benefitted greatly just from Brett and Jesse's tips alone, but it has taken time.  Plus there can still be roadblocks and days where the voice doesn't seem to respond as one would like it to.  Sometimes this is due to physical issues, sometimes it's down to bad habits creeping in.   At the end of the day, I  honestly feel that the pay-off is worth it.  All of a sudden a breakthrough happens just when you least expect it.   So in spite of the occasional setbacks, my advice is to keep  practising.  You will experience quite amazing results if you stay the course.

not sh*t

Pete, I to first thought what you did...i sounded like a sissy up high trying this method...but...I pressed on.At first I used to sort of yell the high stuff and i could tell i was straining the "stuff" out of my voice and throat...so i knew my technique was flawed somewhere. You see it is the correct technique, rather than amplitude you should seek on the higher notes. Once your muscles are used to this technique, the amplitude and power will come in a short time if you truly practice. It did for me...and now I feel no strain...im not perfect...but I am having a lot more fun that i used to...and i dont cringe trying to keep up singing with Geoff Tate of Queensryche while I’m drivin in my car chillin..."Eyes of a Stranger" is so much more satisfying now...and I can sleep better at night now knowing no neighborhood cats have died...For some of the material I am covering right now I definitely cant sound like a sissy.  Sissy = badLoud and proud = good Happy singing ;) JP

roadblock

I've been using Singing Success for several months now. I'm trying to kick off years of rust preceded by years of abuse by over-singing/yelling hard rock. I REALLY brought up chest and it's still a battle to break that habit. I'm getting better control and habits DURING EXERCISES, but it doesn't translate well to real singing yet. And I haven't noticed my range increasing at all in quite some time. High notes are still iffy, and too breathy and I'm not hitting higher notes than 3 months ago. Getting concerned.

didnt really work

it isnt really useful, i did the lessons in the program like crazy, and i now can hit all the high notes, but it sounds powerless and not really masculine, while my lower range is incredibly masculine and strong, this is shit i think.

I cannot watch the videos on

I cannot watch the videos on this web page!

Confused....

hey there! I'm confused... I've discovered my whistle register, but i've been told that it is risky. Should I continue? Oh! And, I've followed your advise in singing high notes but i still couldn't hit those high notes. What should I do?

Unhealthy

I have a question; I think i have vocal problems (nodules, or something like that) how long would i take to increase my range??
